“Good night babe!” we said to each other, turning off the lights as we slipped into bed.

It was our our first night in this cabin we found on AirBnB – secluded in the woods across the road from one of the many Caribbean colored lakes that pepper the northern part of lower Michigan.

Our son softly snoring in his pack’n’play combined with the symphony of summer crickets quickly lulled my wife and I to sleep… Suddenly, a primordial scream rang through the forest.

“What! Was that?” my wife whispered…

“I don’t know!” I said.

It sounded like a mix of a Zombie (pick your movie really) and a Howler Monkey, with a pinch of Mountain Lion.

Straining to see through the dark of night, I reached for my pocket knife and flashlight.

“Whatever it is, it’s close…”

One thing was for sure… we weren’t sleeping any time soon.

Jesus Sleeps where He wants

“A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’ He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be Still!’ He said to his disciples, ‘Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?'” Mark 4:37 – 40

When you’re Jesus, you know what’s going on… you are in control and your environment bends to your will. That’s why He’s able to sleep in the storm.

He’s the alpha and nature is the beta. He’s first, all else is second.

[KiwiClickToTweet tweet=”The alpha lion sleeps where he wants because he has nothing to fear. #Godislove #Godwins #restinGod” quote=”The alpha lion sleeps where he wants because he has nothing to fear. “]

Jesus isn’t afraid because He knows God is in control and has a plan for Him. He lives in the belief that God is watching over Him and rests in God despite the storm going on in life.

He calls us to the same rest as well and He tells us how – Faith. Faith drives out fear because it places hope in the one who is larger than our circumstances…

Rest in Him

Eventually, we managed to gather enough courage to fall back asleep… After I closed the windows, double checked the doors, and turned on the flood lights outside the cabin.

Fortunately, our son didn’t wake up from the commotion. It was the freakiest thing I’d ever heard in nature and I’ve never heard it again.
